ORLEN Jazz Festiwal XXV Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa will begin on June 12 2023
with the Festival Contest Final in Radio Katowice Concert Hall. The official
opening will take place in the evening, in Seat of the Polish National Radio
Symphony Orchestra in Katowice (NOSPR). The highlight of the day will be the
concert of Ibrahim Maalouf, artist who grew up at the meeting point of the
European and Arabic cultures and a virtuoso of a quarter tone trumpet. His
unique style and sound of his instrument have been recognized throughout the
world.
Further Festival events will be held in Bielsko-Biała – a thriving cultural center,
aspiring to become the European Capital of Culture 2029.
On June 13, the historical interior of the Polish Theater will host Polish Jazz Gala
featuring: Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski Quartet and Piotr Wojtasik Quintet with
Anna Maria Jopek – a vocalist who will receive the Jazz Angel 2023 Award.
On Wednesday June 14 Zadymka will move to Cavatina Hall where another Jazz
Angel will go to this year’s Artist-in-Residence – American bassist, vocalist and
composer, esperanza spalding. “Off-Brand gOdds”: esperanza spalding &
Antonio Brown Dance” is her latest dance and music project. This evening, the
festival audience will also listen to the premiere performance of the new album
by Horntet, the winner of the Festival Contest 2022.
On June 15 the organizer will celebrate the Festival jubilee during a special
concert #ZadymyRobimy which will bring together, both on the stage and in the
audience of Bielskie Centrum Kultury, people who have been involved in
organizing Zadymka Festival for the last 25 years. Jarosław Klimaszewski, the
President of Bielsko-Biała, took the honorary patronage over this year’s Festival
and founded special awards, the “25th-anniversary Angels” which will be handed
over to those who have particularly contributed to and supported Zadymka over
the years.The highlight of the evening will be the concert of Chico Freeman &
Antonio Faraò Quartet “Tribute to John Coltrane” and the premiere of the
recent album “Come Together” by Apostolis Anthimos Trio.
On June 16, Zadymka will present for the first time, a musical marathon “RQS
New Tone” – a series of concerts presenting the new “jazz wave” from Poland and
UK. Wrocław-based sneaky jesus will open the evening and then, the Jazz Club
Metrum stage will host London groups: Ill Considered and Theon Cross.
On June 17 the Festival will move to the Small Arena in Gliwice where a
dedicated scene will be raised to host The Silesian Philharmonic Symphony
Orchestra directed by Clark Rundell with esperanza spalding, a jazz trio
featuring: Kris Davis, Terri Lyne Carrington, Tineke Postma and Antonio
Brown Dance group. The Festival audience will have a chance to see the unique
show “Celebrating the Symphonic Legacy of Wayne Shorter”.
Zadymka will end on June 18 with a New Orlean’s Parade marching through the
streets of Bielsko-Biała. The Festival Promotion Stage will present: Hania Derej
Quintet and Henriette Eilertsen.
The Festival’s accompanying events will include photography and poster
exhibitions, the concerts of ZPSM Big Band, jam sessions, movie projections,
workshops and “surprise” gigs. Young musicians from Bielsko-Biała have been
also creating the Zadymka Brass Band which will promote jazz and the Festival in
Bielsko-Biała and Silesia region from a special platform.
